Arizona Catcher Chris Snyder “Fractures” Left Testicle

This story brought me to my knees on first read. In a game Monday night Arizona Diamondback catcher Chris Snyder “fractured” his left testicle after a foul tip shot into his grundle. The play occured in the fourth inning when Milwaukee’s Cory Hart swung at a low pitch.

As of Tuesday Snyder was placed on the 15-day disabled list  and now he is expected to have surgery- despite an earlier report.

When RBI heard of the terrible mishap, we asked around to find out what exactly it means to “fracture a testicle”. Unfortunatley, the word fracture has nothing to do with a bone in this case.

According to eMedicine.com, a testicular rupture or fractured of the testis refers to a rip or tear in the tunica albuginea resulting in extrusion of the testicular contents.  I think I would rather have one of my arms cut off. OUCH!

RBI’s advice: FOR GOD SAKES PUT A HELMET ON THE OTHER HEAD!

One thing is for sure….this Diamondback will not be circling the bases for a long time!

Why wasn’t he wearing a cup?

He was wearing a cup, you can clearly see the ball bounce off of it in the video. Perhaps it was ill-fitting and the lower edge had ridden up onto one of his boys?? Who knows…

If I remember right, Paul Moyer of the Seattle Seahawks ruptured a testicle (not sure which side - weak or strong) during a game. Because it was football, he stayed in the game.

I was at the game and when he was hit he did the hands on the knees thing all hunched over for about two minutes. We all thought he had been hit in the thigh and received a severe dead leg because we figured the cup had protected him. After reading this article, I now know the crazy part is HE KEPT PLAYING!

So you thought they were indestructible? Made of titanium, rather than flesh and blood?

I’m surprised more of this doesn’t happen in sports– blown balls.

I wish i never read this story.

“I wish I never read this story.”

Can we have some sort of “Get Well” card for Chris Snyder? I think all of us know that some nasty pain can be associated with blows to the testicles…but “breaking” one has just gotten on to the list of my “it could happen” type of fears.

    Hey Dan,

You saw it live??? oh god, I hope you didnt hear it…

sorry to all who experienced a slight pain while reading this article, but I couldn’t help but post this article.

After what Snyder went through he deserves hundreds of get well cards!
